The Lightning Whelk was adopted by the State Legislature in 1987 as the Texas State Sea Shell.

These gift packs were inspired and created originally from the previous owners of Shell World, The Branch Family. Mildred Tate from the Brazosport Museum, Hall of Malacology directed State Senator Buster Brown from Lake Jackson to Shell World to retrieve this seashell to present to Governor Bill Clements. It was named the Texas State Seashell. House concurrent resolution #75. They also provided small lightning whelks that were presented to each of 70 to 75 legislators at this signing.
We acquired the Shell World inventory after it's 44 years of serving The Texas Gulf Coast and are proudly continuing this tradition.
